There are a few tutorials and snippets of information out there on race editing (pretty much all written by me). Apparently this gives much more control over track features and options. I came across a post made by the modmaker Vetron on another site, talking about 'creating tracks external to the game' using nothing but notepad to make them.

Really that editor is a mess and AI never works properly (it doesn’t compute and set the AI parameters correctly) – it’s an improvement over the stock in-game editor as you can do some things you previously couldn’t (place checkpoints off-road for example), but aside from that manual editing is the way to go. For instance if you throw a few checkpoints around and select some AI opponents then it will likely give you a choice between knock out and checkpoint. I haven’t got the game open in front of me right now, but pressing I or the right trigger should switch to the menu, however the map mode section is only accessible under certain conditions – e.g. Can anyone give me a tip on that perchance? But for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get the cursor to select the two panes below this: 'Map Mode' and 'Race Validation'. I have found how to switch from the map view to the AI selection pane, and then pressing enter there drops it down to the window below where you can select the time of day and weather conditions etc.

I am loving the mod and it's features so far, even if one or two of them are just a tad buggy. But after a while I heard about the Refueled mod by Vetron which (among other improvements) allowed the player to make much more intricate and detailed tracks, so when the game went on sale on Steam I just had to pick it up and try the mod.

I first got this game on PS3 a long time ago and fell in love with it, especially the race editor mode.
